Goulburn Terrace

Goulburn Terrace is one of the smaller boutique vineyards in the Nagambie region. Dedicated to remaining small, and concentrating on high quality rather than volume, the wines are elegant in style. Shiraz, the longtime staple of the region, is made here into a less powerful, more aromatic wine than the bigger Central Victorian types.

In 1992, Greta Moon purchased 60 acres of land fronting the Goulburn River at Nagambie. The property, known as Goulbourn Terrace, was one of the earliest vineyards in the area. It was planted originally in the 1860s, but the vines had been pulled during the 50s.

Greta replanted in 1992/93 with 6 hectares of chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon grapes, and a contract with Mitchelton Winery for purchase of the fruit.

Mike Boudry joined the business in 1999, establishing a small winery on the property. Together, Mike and Greta began production of wines under the Goulburn Terrace label, from selected parcels of Goulburn Terrace fruit, plus some shiraz purchased from near neighbours.

In the years since, production has continued, with five to ten tonnes of fruit crushed each year. Small batches of other varietals have been made, including Marsanne, Rousanne, Viognier, Mourvedre and Grenache.

The focus in both viticulture and winemaking has been the creation, in small quantities, of the very best quality wines that the local terrior is capable of producing. The biodynamically grown vines are hand-pruned to low yields and hand harvested. The wines are hand-plunged and basket-pressed. Reds are unfiltered. The styles are complex and structured.

Sales have been to selected restaurants, via mail order, and direct from the cellar door facility, which was opened in late 2002. Sales through all channels have gradually grown as the brand has established its reputation.

Domestic sales, although growing well (both at cellar door and through wholesale), will not provide the large increase in sales that Mosaic Australia seek. Their objective is to develop export markets that will deliver volumes, equal to or greater than, their expanding domestic sales. The company is actively seeking markets in which the savoury and complex characters of their wine is appreciated and valued. Success in Canada, where the Goulburn Terrace styles are preferred, has allowed for the company to sell at higher price points. Goulburn Terrace hopes to target markets through Europe, particularly the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Asia (possibly Singapore and Japan), as these areas are currently somewhat dominated by European wines.

Mike Boudry and Greta Moon are both qualifed winemakers, having graduated in Wine Science at Charles Sturt University. Mike’s earlier background was as a Physicist, with a PhD from the University of Melbourne.
